For the rest of the Premier League season, we will be taking a look at the foundations and charities that the Premier League clubs are running to help their community in Great Britain and around the world. We have covered Manchester City, Manchester United, and Chelsea so far and now it is time to showcase The Arsenal Foundation. This is by far the most in-depth site I have covered so I would highly suggest heading over and checking the entire site out in case I miss anything that may interest you.
The Arsenal Foundation was formed in the early 2000s but do not let that fool you. Arsenal has been a club completely based around their community. The club it self was founded in 1886 by munitions workers (hence, the Gunners) to escape the daily grind of factory life. From the beginning, Arsenal has been serving the community and the people that make soccer so special, the fans. One cool thing the Gunners used to do is sell the match day programs for a penny and all of the proceeds were donated to Homes for Working Boys. Arsenal even had a Charity match for the victims of the Titanic. To see where the club has come from to get to where they are today, check out their foundation’s history.
Another in-depth read is the entire booklet that is available online here about every little thing that the foundation does in terms of its work.
Arsenal supports two main charity partners, Save the Children and the Willow Foundation. Save the Children focuses on the rights of children around the world. The club and charity work closely together in their immediate community and around the world. The Arsenal Foundation has donated over 70,000 euros to Save the Children’s Eat, Sleep, Learn, Play! program as well as the Families and Schools Together (FAST) program. Both of these programs support the well-being of children and families in the community around the club. The program not only focuses on the children, but also helps teachers be better equipped in teaching the children lessons that will be more beneficial to their futures.
The Willow Foundation is a charity devoted to giving ill children the chance to live one of there dreams out, much like the Make-A-Wish foundation. Arsenal has donated over 300,000 to the charity to help these children experience a day they will never forget.
If you are around Arsenal, you can apply to receive a grant from The Gunners Fund. Here is what the club looks for in potential partners:
- Education (including academic, social, physical education, skills training and community engagement)
- Sports capable of improving health
- Sickness and the relief of suffering
- Individual misfortune
Lastly, if you would like to get involved with the club, check out this link where you can donate to the foundation to help all of the great things the club is doing.
